In recent years, Data has become a very important part of any company's business, due to the potential that owning data can have. This has reached a point where companies may be more valuable for the data they hold than for the business they do.
The amount of information
available to major companies, such as Amazon and Facebook, is immense and
invaluable. You'd be surprised what they know about us. Data can be a
competitive and competitive advantage for companies, even more so in such a
digitised world.
They help us make better
decisions, allow us to better anticipate and solve problems, know our customers
better, develop better strategies and increase productivity.
This world of data has led to
tools for its analysis and use, with the aim of making the most of this
information. Examples of this are big data, data mining and crm.
These tools make it possible
to analyse the data and draw conclusions from it. After obtaining the
conclusions we wanted, we can use this information to develop artificial
intelligence or similar systems, useful for companies due to the number of
advantages they offer.
After this introduction, I
will now turn to the subject of this post, which is data warehousing. All this
data is stored on servers, waiting to be used, but where are these servers?. Who
is the owner of these servers?
Where do you think this data is concentrated? The answer is surprising but somewhat predictable. They are in the United States and China, two of today's major powers, also in the world of data. According to the news, these countries own more than half of all internet and cloud data.
Data processing centres are
the spaces where the resources necessary for the processing of an
organisation's information are concentrated. The total number of large data
centres increased to 659, doubling the 2016 figure, highlighting the enormous
growth of this activity.
The next most popular locations are Japan, Germany, UK, India... Representing 25% of the total. In short, the most powerful countries have the most data. In Canada alone there are 50 such information centres. Many of these are owned by multinationals such as Amazon, Microsoft, Google or IBM, among others.
And now talking about
companies, it is detailed that half of these data centres worldwide are owned
by Amazon, Microsoft and Google. Similarly, in the last year, the companies
that have grown the most in data ownership are ByteDance, Tencent and Alibaba,
all of Chinese origin.
Similarly, the companies
spending the most on new data centres and upgrading existing ones were Amazon,
Google and Microsoft, followed by Facebook, Apple, Alibaba, ByteDance and
Tencent.
According to Synergy Research
Group chief analyst Jhon Dinsdale: "The growth of hyperscale data centres
is on a straight-line trajectory, with an average of 16 new data centres coming
online every quarter for the past three years.
To conclude this news item, I
must say that the data pie is shared among the big companies in each country,
establishing a monopolistic situation due to the power they possess. In spite
of everything, this amount of information has been received by the clients of
each company, who have authorised the collection of this information, through
cookies, for example. In my opinion, this world should be more legislated, as
we would be surprised what they know about each client.
What do you think about this
issue? I look forward to your answers in the comments!
In the same way, possessing so
much information is of great importance for companies, but it can also be
dangerous, as this information can also be useful for other entities. This
reflection is the subject of the next news item.
The hacking took place at an office in India, in which
customer, company, passwords and financial data were stolen. The
data theft was due to a vulnerability in the company's servers, unlike the
first time, which was due to malicious software.
In this case, the hackers have
not asked for a financial reward. In the previous hack, they asked for $50
million.
The stolen database has been
published on Raid Forums. This web portal is where stolen databases are usually
published. Likewise, the information has been sent to media outlets around the
world, with the intention of verifying its authenticity.
The group behind the hacking
is called the "Disorder Group", whose aim is to cause as much chaos
as possible, attack major supply chains and obtain ransom money.
Acer is the world's 4th
largest manufacturer in terms of sales, with a total of 7000 employees, spread
across the 40 countries in which it operates. Its sales in 2020 were USD 8.5
billion, with profit of approximately USD 1 billion. However, after this second
attack, its sales have fallen by up to 5%.
In my opinion, I think a
company like Acer, which specialises in computers, should be one of the most
secure in the world, but for it to have suffered two hacks in the same year is
disappointing.
As a conclusion to this news,
I must state that a great power such as data comes with a great responsibility,
as your customers have trusted you to collect it and put it to the best
possible use.
I must also state that having
such a large amount of data as these companies have is very dangerous, because
of the value of this data.
Therefore, the cybersecurity
departments of these companies must secure this information, because if you are
able to collect it, you must be able to protect it.
What do you think about this issue? I would love to hear
your opinion in the comments!

Some people are very worried about this; I personally do not really care as long as my personal data is well protected, if the companies know how I am probably they will offer me better product according to my interests.
The problem comes out when the companies do not have secure systems and the hackers stole their data and uses it to steal money from us or to collect private information about our lives and us.
