Big Data is
a resource that has been used for quite some time, not only in the business
world, but also in many areas such as medicine or politics. For anyone who uses
it, it will be quite useful to know practically anything you want to know that
has had a history in which data has been collected. Big Data, for those who do
not know what it is, is a term that refers to data sets so large and complex
that they require non-traditional data processing applications to process them
properly. In other words, an immense sea of data that must be compiled and
ordered by means of computer processes in order to be useful and to know what
you want to know based on this compilation.
In addition, Big Data is driving the progress
of society and, above all, of companies, as it is allowing companies to get to
know their customers better, offer them better products and even anticipate
their needs and offer them the product before the customers are looking for it.
Despite the fact that it seems to be a very useful and necessary tool for
companies, in Spain only 6% of companies used it on a recurring basis in 2020.
I am sure that this percentage will rise over the years because, in my opinion
and that of many others, a company that is not aware of and using Big Data will
probably have no future and is doomed to fail, or at the very least, to not
compete on equal terms with its competitors.
In the world of politics, the use of Big Data has also been key,
providing political parties with more data on voters and helping them to run
more accurate campaigns. The greatest example of this use in politics has been
in the United States with the last two former presidents Barack Obama and
Donald Trump. The representative of the Democratic Party, Barack Obama, used Big
Data in 2012 to manipulate social networks and thus manage to persuade
African-Americans and Hispanics to vote, which played a major role in the final
votes and was key to Obama winning the election. He managed to sway the vast
majority of the undecided and those who were disappointed with politics to
finally get their vote. Donald Trump did something similar in 2016, when the
Republican representative was a candidate for the elections, he hired a company
called Cambridge Analytica, which managed to get a lot of information that was
of great help to Trump to, like his predecessor, persuade the vote of the
population. In this case, Cambridge Analytica conducted a psychological survey
of many Facebook users in order to collect the data, without them obviously
knowing what it was going to be used for. As a result of this, Facebook was
taken to court in the United States due to the serious breach of customer
privacy. In my opinion, it seems to me that Big Data was used in the wrong way,
as I believe that it could be put to better use than it was on this occasion.
Big Data is a great advance that society has made, but I think that it should
be used responsibly, as many of these data contain private information that
many people would not like to be shared. Let alone using Big Data to persuade
people to vote. I consider it "cheating" because democracy has to be
fair and equal for all, and all citizens have the right to vote freely and
without any persuasion.
But it is
also being used to do things that really help, and not just to increase your
company's profit, Big Data is being used to save lives. Medicine is also
joining the use of this tool in areas such as the study of genomics. Genomics
is the study of the genetic material of organisms, which has always been very
expensive and very difficult to carry out.
However, thanks to Big Data it is
becoming cheaper, as can be seen in the graph (according to paradigmadigital.com). This type of study is vital in
medicine and is making it possible, among other things, to prevent diseases. A
clear example of this is that of Angelina Jolie, who after undergoing a genetic
test, decided to have a preventive mastectomy based on the high risk of breast
cancer that she was diagnosed with. Obviously,
I believe that the use of Big Data in medicine is an extremely important
advance in society and will allow us to increase people's life expectancy
considerably. If thanks to Big Data, among other technological tools such as
Artificial Intelligence, diseases can be found earlier, I think we should
invest and prioritise more than what is already being done.
Another
fantastic use of Big Data is to stop the now famous "Fake News". For
example, Google developed an algorithm which scores websites based on the facts
presented. This algorithm assigned documents a trust score that Google uses to
determine search rank.
As a final
conclusion, I would like to add that Big Data has an interesting double edge.
After all, Big Data handles an immense amount of data, including very valuable
information for companies, as well as private data of individuals. I believe
that this new tool that is advancing us so much should be treated very
delicately because, as we have seen, Big Data can be used to do things that
really help and are useful, or only for the benefit of a few.

It also helps organizations harness their data and use it to identify new opportunities. That, in turn, leads to smarter business moves, more efficient operations, higher profits and happier customers. In some studies, companies that make use of big data claim that they get value in the following ways; cost reductions, faster and better decision making and new products and services.
In my opinion, the bid cat is a very important tool in today's business world, since, through the collection and processing of information, valuable information can be obtained to design the strategy of a company.
Big data, together with data mining, is a perfect combination for companies that have a lot of data, but are not able to use it effectively.
As the article says, this tool is very important in politics, as political parties can target their advertising campaigns to voters more accurately.
In short, it is an essential tool in this day and age, where information is power and is an important part of the value that businesses possess.
It has always been said that information is power and for proof of this article. Today thousands of data are generated per second, and which can provide us with a lot of information.
I think it is very important that companies take into account all this data as it can help predict models and advance results with high-efficiency rates which gives greater security and viability to business, thus reducing uncertainty as well as errors and losses of all kinds of resources (time, materials, economic, etc.).
I find what I read in the blog very useful because, being something so new, the infinity of functions and information that can be extracted from a set of data has yet to be developed.
It is true that in recent years there are companies that are highly specialised in this area, and that progress has been very great, but we cannot say that everything has been invented about massive data, because valuable information can be extracted more and more quickly and automatically. It will be the programmes themselves that decide which information is valuable and which is not.
