ALL ABOUT BLACK FRIDAY

We know that this weekend is Black Friday and that we are all going to be ready to make several purchases at a good price. So, let's dedicate today's post to know what we don't know about this

“Special Day”.

What is Black Friday?

It consists of a retail phenomenon that produces a great rise in the income of businesses.

It has its origin in the United States. It is always celebrated on the last Friday of November, the day after Thanksgiving. It all starts in the 60s, coinciding with a time when U.S. retailers wanted to increase their sales during the holidays.

The name was coined in the 60s in Philadelphia, United States. It was how the cops described the city's traffic chaos when hordes of suburban shoppers and tourists flooded into the city in advance of the big Army-Navy football game held on that Saturday every year and the increment of sales in the shops the day after Thanksgiving.

The term "Black Friday" spread throughout the country in the 70s. Little by little this term spread to become a world reference.

Another origin that is said to have this term is because of the red numbers that many companies had in the businesses accounting spreadsheets; it was noted that this weekend the numbers went from being red to black simply in a day.

The fact that there are discounts does not mean that there will be losses.  On the contrary, in this case sales volume are skyrocket and is beneficial to Retailers.

But Lookout! Be careful with Black Friday fraud.

In United States, price reductions are very real and obvious, but however, here in Spain and Latin America they are not even comparable. Since these locations decided to adopt Black Friday there are many problems arising with this sale as many companies take advantage of the occasion to raise prices weeks before this date and then lower them on Black Friday and make it seem like they are giving good offerings. It is essential to know the official price of the product, the history and trajectory of prices of an item and compare between retailers to obtain accurate information.  Don’t be surprised after doing your research that you might find lower prices on the same article depending on the different companies.

Another concept that is also closely related to Black Friday is Cyber Monday which is the Monday after Black Friday weekend and many of the businesses extend their discounts to this day.

After knowing all of this we have informed ourselves very well for this year’s Black Friday Sale here in Spain starting on November 25, although as you already know the sales do not usually start on this day, from the beginning of the month we can already see many discounts.  Many brands prefer to distribute discounts throughout the month instead of concentrating on the same day or weekend.

We will find discounts in practically all sectors: fashion, toys, sports, technology, or home, among many more. In addition, shops offer the possibility to return your purchases beyond January 6, 2023, and some might even extend their return policy until February. This way these retailers seek to encourage purchases and advance Christmas shopping without being afraid of not having enough time to return an item.

According to a Web loyalty study on this year's Black Friday, it says that spending online purchases will increase by 25% compared to 2021, despite the crisis and inflation that we are experiencing.

In Spain more than 1,000 stores are added to this “Sale”. Let's make a review of the companies that have already announced their Black Friday plans for this year:

  • Amazon: they usually start a few days before; Pre-Black Friday begins on 20th of November.
  • Media Mark: have advanced most on their website we can already see many discounts on televisions, computers, appliances, technology, Skates... This year they will end their discounts with Cyber Monday.
  • El Corte Ingles: All departments are added to the discounts. They will start in physical stores on the 25th, but like every year the discounts will begin on the web from 22.00 hr. on the 24th and will end with Cyber Monday.
  • Fnac: they have announced that they will have discounts of up to 50% on all their categories.
  • Inditex (Zara, Stradivarius, Pull&Bear, Bershka, Oysho, Massimo Dutti y Zara Home): As they have been doing for a few years now, Black Friday will reach their Applications at 20.00 hr. and then to their websites at 22.00 hr. on the 24th of November. However, to its physical stores not until the 25th. The campaign will last 24 hours as in previous years.

Many of these companies and many others apart from the discounts have other advantages that we can benefit from such as:

  • Free shipping: if you are one of the people who hates queuing, crowds and loading with purchases, you have the perfect excuse to buy online and at the same time eliminate Shipping costs.
  • Returns: Many of the businesses that offer Black Friday increase their Return deadlines until February and so we can take advantage to make Christmas purchases at a better price.
  • Subscribe to their newsletter: being subscribed to your favorite stores is no nonsense since we can count on many advantages such as exclusive discounts for members who start member sales and even earlier discounts exclusive to you.

As you say Adriana, Black Friday is a special day every year in which most of the products sold in physical stores and ecommerce, are discounted to a greater or lesser degree. However, for some years now Black Friday can be prolonged up to almost a week depending on which establishments.
This is an excellent marketing strategy, because in many cases you do not have anything in mind to buy but with the excuse of Black Friday, you end up buying something extra.
I personally love this day and compare in advance the different sales offered by stores, especially Zara.
Great post!

In my opinion the black friday has done a lot of good for the consumer as they can buy many things before Christmas comes as it is a month of high spending, so people can better distribute the expenditure of each month and although it does not seem to buy more.
What I also think is that you have to be very careful because you get very old products that are already worth the price it is worth, or also put a discount that really is not, so if they give everything with much truthfulness will be fine, but if you try to cheat I think it goes against ethics and tednria to have consequences.

I personally think that Black Friday is a scam, because what companies do is to raise prices weeks before and when Black Friday arrives they put the original prices, and that is not fair because it should be something that helps others and not something that appears to be cheating them.
The truth is that I am not usually a buyer at this time of Black Friday, because I also believe that it does not benefit either the consumer or the worker because they are more hours and more exhaustion,
it is true that there are companies that do use Black Friday well, and do not try to deceive the consumer, but make real discounts to help consumers, and more in the Christmas season.
Do you buy during Black Friday? I admit that sometimes I fall

I found the information given in the article about the increase in prices weeks before this date and the drop to the initial price on Black Friday very interesting and necessary for those people who do not know the market in detail. They want to make it look like they are making some good offers, but they haven't really made any. It is true that to really know if the offer offered is real we should inform ourselves about the product about the official price of the product, the history and price history of the item and compare between other distributors to get accurate information. In this way it manages not to be scammed in the purchases since previously we have investigated about it.

Black Friday is an idea brought from the United States that has been very good for companies as they can increase their sales in a remarkable way during a day that in some cases is prolonged until a week , it is said that they register 30% of annual sales in less than a week thanks to great offers. Currently many consumers buy Christmas presents during this time to save money. It is therefore important for companies to do a good job in marketing to attract the largest number of consumers and to be noticed in what is the most important time of the year for companies.

It is interesting how a retail phenomenon that was originated in the United States, celebrated on the last Friday of November, the day after Thanksgiving have begun and evolve. It began in the 1960s as a way for retailers to increase their sales during the holiday season. The name "Black Friday" comes from the heavy traffic and crowds of shoppers that descended upon Philadelphia on that day. In the United States, Black Friday is a major shopping event, with retailers offering deep discounts on a wide range of products. Many stores open early and offer promotions to attract shoppers. In recent years, Black Friday has also become popular in other countries, including Spain and Latin America. Many retailers in these countries offer discounts on the day, although the discounts are not always as significant as those in the United States.

I find this post very interesting, I didn't know that the name "blackfriday" came from the name that some policemen used to give to a football day, but it doesn't surprise me that it comes from the fact that the numbers of the companies went from being red to black. What I don't like about blackfriday is exactly what this post talks about, why do they raise the prices days before blackFriday to put them back "low" or as they were before this day? As a Spaniard, I have experienced this price "scam", and although it is not legal, companies continue to do it. Sometimes we even think that they are laughing at us.

I found interesting your post and I want to congratulate for the work you have done. I did not know what the origin of Black Friday was. It is true that I heard before some other version of the name, but yours seem to be the more logical. I think Black Friday can help retailers to get a big amount of sales, even more if it is in a period of time when the companies are suffering the most. Black Friday is another tradition that is influenced by the EEUU, but I think that for those of us who love marketing we agree that it is a time of the year that we can enjoy both as consumers and marketers.

Great comment Adriana!
At first, BlackFriday was celebrated for one day. After a few years, this celebration has been extended and there are discounts for a week. One of the problems that has generated the large number of people who buy during these days is that brands take advantage and do not make super discounts as in its beginnings. Even so, I think it is an opportunity to buy some items that during the rest of the year are kept at a high price.
I personally love this day because I take the opportunity to buy products for me and my family.

Black Friday is a day of massive discounts celebrated on the last Friday of November in the United States and has spread to many other countries around the world. Black Friday is known for offering incredible discounts on a wide variety of products, from electronics to clothing to furniture. Many companies take advantage of this opportunity to entice consumers with special offers and promotions, which can be a great opportunity to save money on holiday shopping. However, Black Friday has also been criticized by some for promoting excessive consumerism and causing crowds and disturbances in stores. Despite this, Black Friday remains a very popular day for shopping and is a tradition that has gained much popularity around the world.
